Self Confidence in Kids

Building Self Confidence in Kids with Jiu-jitsu

Perhaps the biggest challenge among the parents of today’s youth is developing self confidence in their children. Social media, cyber bullying and less face to face interaction/ being outdoors has left many of today’s youth feeling isolated. This isolation weakens kids and they are more likely to turn toward drugs, alcohol and quick fixes. Jiu-jitsu is the perfect solution to such a problem. Jiu-jitsu requires that children develop trust and work together as a team. It develops both their mind and body and molds them into more reliable and more confident individuals.

Why Jiu-jitsu?

While there are plenty of wonderful activities available for children, Jiu-jitsu offers something very unique. For starters, there is no “sitting the bench” as you will find with many team sports. Jiu-jitsu is a team based activity where every individual gets to play. Because training session and competitions are one-on-one, every student has the opportunity to participate just as much as the next. Jiu-jitsu is also one of the few activities that requires just as much mental effort as it does physical. The techniques require focus and awareness and the physical output is as challenging as any sport that exists. This beautiful combination of self awareness, effort and teamwork makes jiu-jitsu the perfect activity for children of all ages to build self confidence

How to get started in Jiu-jitsu for kids

Getting your family started in Jiu-jitsu is pretty simple. You need to find a school that is within driving distance and schedule a free trial lesson. When you are there, be sure to ask these important questions:

  1. How will your program teach my child self confidence and self discipline?
  2. What character skills are taught in the weekly classes?
  3. How do you work with the family to ensure a positive outcome for your students?
  4. Do you teach realistic self defense and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes?
  5. Will the classes challenge my child both mentally and physically?

If the school you choose can answer YES to these questions, you may have found a winner. Be sure to speak openly with the instructors, take their feedback and work with your child to correct any issues. Also, strongly consider taking classes yourself. This is a shortcut to your child’s success.
