Jiu-jitsu Training for All Ability Levels

Jiu-jitsu Training for all Ability Levels

Many times when a new adult students begin training in Jiu-jitsu, there is a feeling that everyone else knows what they’re doing except them. This is a normal feeling but it’s completely ridiculous. Every black belt who trains started off as a brand new white belt with no skill whatsoever. What adult students need to realize is that they are taking the same path that every great martial artist took before them. As long as the school they are training in offers a comprehensive fundamentals program, they will do great. In fact, within just a few weeks, new adult students will be incredibly knowledgeable and will even be able to offer assistance to brand new students in class.

Checking the Ego

The reason that many adults feel inadequate when it comes to martial arts is that they allow their egos to get the better of them. In Jiu-jitsu, a new student is going to make mistakes and get “tapped out”. Most people don’t like this feeling at first and their egos try to protect their feelings. By reminding themselves that tapping out is an important part of learning and that they are on their own unique path toward Jiu-jitsu Black Belt, they can get the most out of their training. So, if you are a new student in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, kid or adult, remind yourself to focus on how much you have grown since day 1 and not on the fact that the purple bet in class is still better than you. Keep training hard and enjoy the process of learning and overcoming the challenge week after week. In time, you will be the purple belt in class…then the brown belt…and eventually, THE BLACK BELT!
